Human Mute Buttons: Censorship in the Physical Form

Pardon me if I do not cite resources for this particular tech, for my time on the net is very limited today. With that out of the way, let's journey to the implications of this new technology.

Scientists have pinpointed a frequency that when pointed at a person makes them unable to speak. Thought still goes through, as are all actions, save for speech.

What does this mean for society?

First of all, libraries will be splaying this frequency throughout their halls, to make sure no disruptions happen. This is both good and bad. I can't recall how many times I've been pulled out of a fantastical story by some bugger shouting at their significant other about some insignificant thing. A bad part about any whole building with this tech deployed is that if there ever was a true emergency, no one would be able to shout for help. Guess we'll all have to wear whistles when we go to check out books.

There are many uses outside of buildings for this silencing tech, but many of them are very nefarious. Constables and officers of the law will be able to utilize this at their own discretion. If a police person happens upon a demonstration that they may not agree with, they can silence a whole crowd from expressing their viewpoints and exercising their rights to freedom of speech.

Many people I know would love to use this device on me because I say many things that others do not wish to hear. I pull no punches with anyone when it comes to ideas, conceptualizations, and observations of truth. The truth hurts, but not if no one is around to hear it. Well now, they can stop me. I'll be quiet now, but this may be the last time I do so willingly.

  1. Wow that is really interesting but kindof scary! I bet this will be used to silence protests as well!

  2. Dear God please don't let this exist. Or at least let evolution be true and in a few generations it won't affect us. Still, they can silence our words, but they can never silence our actions!

  3. This is just scary. It will definitely be used to stifle people even more, oh don't like what you have to say, poof now you can't talk. stupid.

  4. Not having the freedom of speech is already a form of physical censorship.

  5. HELLS YES, Shockgrubz preachin' troof.

Now, here's the thing though...I simply do not see any legal way for such a device (any censorship ray or gun, for instance) being able to be developed. At least in the U.S., perhaps elsewhere...and that's not to say such a thing can still be made on the down-low. Lord knows there's plenty of other black ops items and gadgets that have only recently been opened to public awareness and scrutiny.

Honestly, what ARE the pros of such a thing? How could such an object be helpful? A "silencer" as far as I see it can only be used FOR nefarious purposes.

Then again, I honestly believe that action speaks louder than words anyway. If the public is to be silenced, than the populace MUST rise to reclaim that voice.

...or they'll simply allow more and more to be taken from them. We shall see.

  6. You mean this one? Of course you mean this one, well I am surprised america cause you really let yourself down. More and more loopholes are being made just to go around the constitution.

It just feels like the microwave gun that they put on top of humvees to disperse large crowds.

  7. Hey, I made it!

I hope people are never allowed to use this new silencing technique... it sounds horrible and unsafe. I would be so claustrophobic if I were suddenly unable to speak.

  8. I call BS on this being real technology that exists today. Still I imagine that it would be deployed anywhere people people talking about the 99% gathered if it did exist.

  9. That is bloomin' amazing! Imagine a human mute remote!

  10. I know it's a personal invasion, but I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to use this on some obnoxious cell phone talker.

    1. I agree. Newstuff is a collection of my interested thoughts in the technological area. If I'm feeling good, I'll write here. If I'm in a funk, no new newstuff. Expect more newstuff to be interesting!

    1. Yup, but even with a bit of bad there's always some good that comes from it. We have to focus in on what can make society better with this type of technology. Noise cancelling has existed for years, but it seems that the marketplace for such technology is saved for the higher-end recording and mastering processes.

    1. And speech from freedom. I would like to use this tech to silence others only in my circle. That way they can talk until they're blue in the face, but only I'm not hearing them.

  14. In theory this sounds awesome, because let's face it, 90% of everything people say is fucking useless anyway.

    1. I agree. I go a little further in thinking that if everybody on earth shut up at the same time, we'd unlock the telepathy that's already ingrained within our minds.

You know I would love if a writer talented like you would visit my blog and check things out!

  16. An intriguing notion, this "silencing device". If only I had one, my wife would be ...

    1. very angry if it were used on her. The muting would only infuriate those that don't use self-imposed silence on themselves.

    1. I could see a positive use for such a device. The silver linings that come to mind are avalanche prevention and library hushing.

  26. I read something like this a few weeks back on Gizmodo. The one I heard about was basically, a device the took your voice, and reshot it back at you out of phase or something. Not exactly like noise canceling headphones, but more like when you are on the phone and you hear your own voice coming back at you, delayed, and it messes with your mind and you have a hard time talking. Your own voice messed with you so bad you couldn't continue.

They joked it would be great in meetings, to have a "Shut the #377 up, Johnson" button.

But the weirdest part was, that the beam actually helped stutterers talk normal, because it broke up the feedback loop that caused stuttering.

Oh, and thanks for swinging by today and following!

  27. Not to mention pointing this thing at your wife when she's talking about her latest purchases... Sorry ladies. Or pointing it at a police officer when he's trying to fine you, and you're going, 'What's that, officer? I can't hear what you're saying...'

  28. I'm sure there are a lot of parents out there who would like to use this device on their kids!

  33. I remember going to smaller library when all the high school kids got out of school, and went to the library. I couldn't focus on my book. I managed to find a random chair in a far away corner to get some remote peace
